The 34 year old Alex Noren overturned a seven shot deficit with a closing ten under par round of 62 to finish two shots clear of Italian Francesco Molinari at Wentworth Club. It was Noren’s ninth victory on the European Tour and he sealed his place in history by winning the launch event for the European Tour’s Rolex Series – a new category of eight premium events on the Race to Dubai each with a minimum prize fund of $7million.

The victory was also his fifth title in just 17 European Tour appearances – an incredible run which took him to a career-high of eight on the Official World Golf Ranking. He can now add the Hilton Golfer of the Month Award for May to his trophy cabinet and he will receive an automatic upgrade to Diamond Status on Hilton Honors, Hilton’s award-winning loyalty program.  “It’s nice to win this award, I really appreciate it,” said Noren. “Winning the BMW PGA Championship was definitely the biggest win of my career. I never thought I could win around Wentworth. It is a very tough track and it is always a great field. So when I did, it felt like a dream come true. It gives you a lot of confidence when you win a big event like that, the first one in the Rolex Series too, and you try to feed off that.” Noren was chosen by the panel comprising members of the golfing media as the recipient of the monthly award ahead of Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, who returned to winning ways by defeating Zander Lombard in a play-off to claim his seventh European Tour title in the Rocco Forte Open – Verdura, Sicily. Englishman Matt Wallace came third following his maiden European Tour title in the Open de Portugal at Morgado Golf Resort. Phil Casey, Golf Correspondent for the Press Association, who was part of the selection panel, said: “To win the European Tour's flagship event is one thing, to do so with a stunning 62 in the final round is quite another. And to do so for a fifth win in 11 months is something special of which Alex Noren can be rightly proud. “Noren overturned a seven-shot deficit with eight birdies and an eagle on the 18th to establish a new course record on the revamped West Course at Wentworth, which underwent a £5million renovation programme after last year's event. Playing partner Peter Uilhein labelled it "the best round of golf I've ever seen" and it's tough to disagree.” Hilton, the Official Hotel Supplier to the European Tour, is the Official Sponsor of the Hilton European Tour Golfer of the Month award, which recognises and rewards the best performances of European Tour members each month.
